Audio Description on TV

Yesterday was Thanksgiving and the amazing Macy’s Thanksgiving Day parade. I generally don’t “watch” it because I can only see bright colors and movement. Yesterday was different.

In the past (two or three years ago) I tried audio description on the TV. At that time the voice was so obviously computer generated that it was very difficult to listen to. The result — I turned it off and did not try it again.

I use Dish Network because it has the DVR so if I hear something interesting I can walk up to the TV, back it up and “watch” what had caught my attention. So, yesterday just out of curiosity I had turned on audio description, and to my great pleasure, a very normal voice narrated the parade. In fact, my fully sighted friend said it was wonderful, because the narrator not only described the colors and movements onscreen, but gave description s including the size and description of the balloons.

If you have not tried audio description, I would highly suggest you try it. It is available on many different platforms, but I really love Dish Network for several reasons.

  • With the DVR I can easily use the service
    • I can set favorites
    • With audio description on it reads the guide to me
    • The remote had a voice control button
    • It can be controlled by Alexa
  • The cost is in line with other platforms and they will work with renewing customers
  • For a nominal fee I can add a second or third DVR for other rooms

f you haven’t tried audio description on your TV, I would highly recommend you try it. It is relatively subtle, so it is not distracting for your fully sighted family members and friends.
